The monthly program of the St. Paul Labor Speakers Club will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and the lack of response by the Bush administration. The program will be Monday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Paul Labor Centre, 411 Mahoney (aka Main) St.
Two New Orleans natives, University of Minnesota Political Science Professor August Nimtz and AFSCME Local 3800 President Phyllis Walker, will talk about their city's catastrophe and the effects of working people.
The heavily industrialized Mississippi River basin between New Orleans and Baton Rouge is the most densely unionized area of the South. Tens of thousands of black, white and Latino workers and their families were devastated by the loss of homes, jobs and loved ones.
The title of the program is "The Tragedy and the Crime: Bush fiddled while New Orleans drowned." It is free and open to the public.
