St. Paul school workers phone in their request for a fair contract

Clerical and technical workers in the St. Paul School District are engaged in a telephone campaign to School Board members to seek a fair contract.

The workers are represented by AFSCME Local 844 and have been without a contract since July 1. On Tuesday, the union gave the district a final offer to settle the negotiations, union representative Rita During said.

Since then, union members and supporters have been phoning School Board members in advance of the board’s Dec. 7 meeting, asking them to support AFSCME’s position.

The key issue is health care, During said.

“The St. Paul School District pays more per month for health insurance for high-paid employees than for low-paid employees,” she said. “That means that for the current year, the district is paying $850 per month for the superintendents with a six-figure income while for our local (average salary of $32,000 per year), the district pays $575 per month.”

The union is not trying to address the entire disparity in one contract, but is asking for additional money in the second year of the pact to narrow the gap, During said.

In particular, the local is urging people to call Board Chair Toni Carter and Treasurer Kazoua Kong-Thao, whom the union said have refused to meet with the workers to hear their side of the issue.
