Steve Hunter, secretary-treasurer to the Minnesota AFL-CIO, was on a national WAMU radio show Labor Day morning discussing the Employee Free Choice Act along with the National Right to Work [for less] Committee. Hunter pointed out that "this election is about the economy and it\'s about health care. The only reason they are talking and distorting the truth about the Employee Free Choice Act is because they know they can\'t win on any of the issues."
The Twin Cities Musicians Union provided a day full of music at the Minnesota AFL-CIO building – thank you musicians! Musicians who performed at the Labor Pavilion on Labor Day included: "Pop" Wagner & Bill Hinkley; Reuben Ristrom, Russ Peterson & Steve Pikal; Dave Graf, Dave Singley & Keith Boyles; and Peter Schimke & Irv Williams. Jay Epstein and Mark Yannie marched and provided music for the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation Marchers in the State Fair Labor Day parade.
AFGE, AFSCME Council 5, Bricklayers, Cement Masons, CWA, IBEW, Ironworkers, Laborers, Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council, MNA, NALC Branch 9, Roofers, SMWIA Local 10, UAW and USW were out on the last day signing Minnesotans up for the Employee Free Choice Act Million Member Mobilization.
At the State Fair, Brandon Romann, Organizer/Business Representative for IBEW Local 292 said, "We have a pile of signatures and a lot of interest in this act ... people are approaching us to talk about it and to sign.
"Minnesotans are educated enough that they can see right through it [distorted ads] and many people are coming in and simply requesting to sign the Employee Free Choice Act petition."
Amanda Tempel with USW District 11 said, "I\'m proud to be here in this new Green Building built to LEED Standards representing the Steel Workers today. I wouldn\'t be anywhere else on Labor Day. It\'s an honor to be here and to organize on wonderful issues like the Employee Free Choice Act and support the Steel Workers all around the state."
Charlie Preston of CWA Local 411 said, "We work with electronic communications all the time ... but nothing beats the face-to-face communications we get here at the fair."
The main focus of CWA at the fair this year was the Employee Free Choice Act "to level the playing field for workers" but they were "also out here to talk about health care, pensions and other working family issues," Preston said.
