State, university workers plan solidarity events

Members of AFSCME Council 5 and MAPE, representing 30,000 state workers, will hold a picnic Wednesday starting at noon on the grounds of the state Capitol. Both unions are immersed in what may be the final days of contract talks with the state.

At the university, members of AFSCME locals 3260, 3800, 3801 and 3937 will rally at noon Wednesday on McNamara Plaza at Oak and Washington, before a meeting of the Board of Regents.

The regents are scheduled to vote on the university\’s budget, the unions said.

"U of M AFSCME members have told the regents that AFSCME employees at the university have lost almost 5 percent in wages over the last four years, when adjusted for inflation," the unions said in announcing the event. "Our purchasing power has eroded; our health care costs have skyrocketed.

"Let the members of the board know that the university should not be associated with the perpetuation of poverty. Rather, this tremendous public institution should work to set a standard of economic well-being for ALL employees!"
