Statewide ‘Labor 2008’ campaign gets under way

The Minnesota events will be part of a nationwide effort by the AFL-CIO to send union members door-to-door to talk with other union members about the record of Senator John McCain, the likely Republican nominee for U.S. president. Many union members respect McCain for his military service, the AFL-CIO acknowledges, but it\’s important for union members to learn about McCain\’s voting record in Washington: supporting tax cuts for the rich, cutting programs for working families, backing unfair trade deals that send American jobs overseas.

AFL-CIO-affiliated unions represent more than 300,000 workers across the state in a variety of occupations and both the private and public sector.

The metro area Labor 2008 kick-off event will be Saturday, May 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Operating Engineers Local 49 hall, 2829 Anthony Lane South, Minneapolis. The event organizers are the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation and the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation.

The program will include speakers and training, followed by doorknocking at the homes of union members. Confirmed speakers include Keith Ellison, 5th District Congressman, and El Tinklenberg, 6th District candidate for Congress. Other friends of labor also will speak.

"If you want to make a difference in the 2008 elections, please join us May 17," said Anna Brejle, MRLF political coordinator. "Union member to union member contact is the key to helping elect our labor-endorsed candidates."
