That’s the date for the 20th annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, organized nationwide by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
The food drive is the nation’s largest one-day food collection, helping to restock local food shelves. The metro area goal for this year’s food drive is to collect more than 1.2 million pounds of food, which will be distributed to local emergency foodshelves by Second Harvest Heartland.
Letter carriers will be picking up donated food along their routes and bringing the donations to local post offices and to waiting trucks at selected Cub Foods locations.
Volunteers will be needed at the Cub Foods locations to help unload letter carrier vehicles and load the larger trucks. For a list of locations, and to volunteer, visit the Second Harvest website.
Volunteers will be needed from 2:00-5:30 p.m. in Minneapolis and the west metro area and from 3:00-6:30 p.m. in St. Paul and the east metro area.
Minneapolis area unions have adopted several of the Cub Foods locations and will be coordinating volunteers at these sites: Blaine North, Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation; Blaine South, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1005; Brooklyn Center, AFSCME; Chaska, South Suburban Labor Council; Coon Rapids, AFSCME Local 4001; Minneapolis (60th and Nicollet), Minneapolis Federation of Teachers; Minneapolis (E. Lake St.), NALC Branch 9.
