Duluth
In Duluth, TakeAction Minnesota and the North East Area Labor Council will hold a march and rally for a fair economy. It will start with a Citizen-to-Citizen Town Hall meeting at 11 a.m. at 211 N. 3rd Ave. that will include presentations on how the economy got this bad, what Republican Congressman Paul Ryan’s budget means for Medicare and the status of the proposed amendments to the Minnesota constitution.
At 11:45 a.m., TakeAction Minnesota will lead a march from the Rainbow Center to the Heaney Federal Building at the Civic Center 515 W. 1st St.
At noon participants will rally on the steps of the Federal Building. Speakers from Duluth and the rural 8th district will speak about the need to raise taxes on the rich and for elected officials to support the "Buffet Rule." A delegation will go into Republican Congressman Chip Cravaack’s office to deliver the message.
Twin Cities
In Minneapolis, Minnesotans for a Fair Economy is sponsoring a downtown rally and march for the 99%. The event starts at 1301 Second Ave. S., and runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will rally outside of the U.S. Bank Shareholders Meeting and then march to Wells Fargo Center.
“Each year on Tax Day, most Minnesotans fill out their tax forms and send in their returns. Those of us in the 99% pay our fair share. Unfortunately, big banks like U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo do not,” organizers said. “At the same time, these financial institutions have directly contributed to the collapse of our economy. They need to be held accountable and respect all customers and communities.”
St. Cloud
In St. Cloud, the Area Labor Council and other organizations are sponsoring an afternoon of leafleting outside the downtown U.S. Post Office from 3 to 6 p.m. “to bring attention to where corporate taxes are going on Tax Day… on vacation. Corporate tax loopholes are allowing companies to hide their money in countries like Aruba, Granada and Panama. This is money that should be going to our schools, neighborhoods and seniors.”
Participants are urged to wear their favorite vacation outfits, such as Hawaiian shirts.
Brainerd
In Brainerd, the Area Labor Council will host a “We are the 99%” rally at the U.S. Post Office, downtown Brainerd, from 4 to 6 p.m. “We are the 99% that pay our taxes – it’s time the 1% pays their fair share,” organizers said.
