Thousands of Letter Carriers gather for national convention

The convention occurs at a time of great challenges for the United States Postal Service, which faces a financial crisis created when Congress required it to pre-fund retiree health care benefits decades in advance. Proposed legislation would further undermine service by eliminating Saturday delivery and closing hundreds of post offices and mail processing facilities.

The Letter Carriers have been in the forefront of opposition to these attacks, which the union said will devastate businesses and communities.

“For 30 years, the Postal Service has not used a dime of taxpayer money, while providing the world’s most efficient and most affordable delivery service,” notes NALC President Fredric Rolando.

NALC\’s national convention is the union\’s supreme governing body, according to the union’s website. The convention meets every two years and elected delegates from every branch across the country are eligible to attend.

At the convention, delegates will consider constitutional amendments, discuss key issues in standing committees and set national policy for the union. Delegates also have the opportunity to attend many educational  meetings, workshops and seminars that are run every day before and after the daily general business sessions.

This year, delegates also will nominate national officers for election.
