An estimated 1,000 people participated in a solidarity rally at the Capitol in St. Paul. Even cities in “deep red America,” in states like Alabama and Missouri, drew crowds in the hundreds, moveon.org reported.
On Sunday, police at the Capitol building in Madison stopped short of evicting all demonstrators from the building, allowing a peaceful, two-week protest to continue. An appointee of Governor Scott Walker had ordered the building cleared, raising the possibility of confrontation.
Walker has insisted he will not compromise on legislation stripping many public employees of their right to a voice on the job. The state faces a $3.6 billion budget deficit, in part because of massive tax breaks the governor issued to corporations upon taking office.
