Transit Workers to vote on contract proposal

Members of Transit Workers Local 1005 will vote Jan. 15 and 16 on a new contract proposal from the Metropolitan Council.

The proposal covers roughly 2,150 bus drivers, light-rail operators, mechanics and other Metro Transit employees, plus about 550 retirees.

Local 1005 President Michelle Sommers said details will be released at an informational meeting for members on Jan. 15. The local’s executive board met Jan. 5 to discuss the proposal; Sommers said any recommendations from the board also will remain private until they can be discussed with members.

The local received the offer from Met Council negotiators on Jan. 3, Sommers said. The proposal would replace a contract that expired July 31. That contract was achieved only after workers conducted a 44-day strike in spring 2004.

The ratification vote will take place Jan. 15 from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Minneapolis Convention Center , 1301 2nd Ave. South, and on Jan. 16 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the union office, 312 Central Ave., Room 438, Minneapolis.
