Tuesday is caucus night in St. Paul

All seven seats on the St. Paul City Council are up for election in November. The caucus is the first step in selecting candidates to run for those seats.

Each political party holds its own caucuses. Although sponsored by different parties and held in different locations, by law all caucuses must start at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6.

The DFL Party will hold a caucus in each ward at the following locations:

Ward 1 – Rondo Education Center, Concordia/Rondo at Dale St.
Ward 2 – Various locations: Precincts 1 to 7 will be at Monroe School, West 7th St. and Crocus Hill; Precincts 8 to 11 will be at Galtier Plaza, Skyway Level, Sibley and 5th Streets; Precincts 12 to 16 will be at Humboldt High School, 30 E. Baker St.
Ward 3 – Highland Jr. High, 975 S. Snelling.
Ward 4 – Hancock Elementary, 1599 Englewood.
Ward 5 – Como Sr. High School, 740 W. Rose.
Ward 6 – Hazel Park Middle School Academy, 1140 White Bear Ave.
Ward 7 – Harding Sr. High Cafeteria, 1536 E. 6th St.

In addition to the regular caucus business, the DFL said it will also hold a straw poll on the Democratic candidates for president in 2008. For more information on the DFL caucuses, go to www.stpauldfl.org

The Republican Party will hold a citywide caucus at Central High School, 275 N. Lexington Parkway. For more information on the Republican Party caucus, go to www.mngop.org

The Green Party will hold a citywide caucus at the Merriam Park Public Library, 1831 Marshall Ave. The party notes that in addition to meeting candidates, the caucus will be an opportunity to learn about the campaign for Instant Runoff Voting in St. Paul elections.
