Twin Cities nurses’ strike to begin at 7 a.m. Thursday

The one-day strike by 12,000 registered nurses will begin at 7 a.m. Thursday and end at 7 a.m. Friday, the union said. Round-the-clock picketing will take place at these hospitals:

• Abbott Northwestern – Minneapolis
• Phillips Eye Institute – Minneapolis
• Children\’s – Minneapolis
• United Hospital – St. Paul
• Children\’s – St. Paul
• St. Joseph\’s – St. Paul
• Bethesda – St. Paul
• Fairview Riverside – Minneapolis
• Fairview Southdale – Edina
• Mercy – Coon Rapids
• Unity – Fridley
• St. John\’s – Maplewood
• Park Nicollet Methodist – St. Louis Park
• North Memorial – Robbinsdale

Since March, the nurses have been in negotiations with six hospital systems: Health East, Allina, Methodist, Children’s, North Memorial and Fairview. Management wants ultimate flexibility in staffing, assigning nurses across units and even across hospitals.

The nurses are seeking guaranteed staffing levels they say are necessary to ensure patient safety and quality of care.

Hospital administrators said they will attempt to keep the facilities operating with the help of replacement nurses hired through national agencies that specialize in providing staff during strikes.
