Education Minnesota represents 70,000 educators across the state.
Operating Engineers Local 49 has 13,000 active members and 3,500 retirees in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The membership of Local 49 works with contracts for highway heavy and building contractors, well drillers, equipment repair shops, welding shops, sand and gravel suppliers, counties, municipalities, school districts and more.
"We believe that Al Franken is the best candidate to defeat Senator Norm Coleman," said Glen Johnson, business manager of Local 49. "Sen. Coleman has been devastating to working people in this state. His support of free trade agreements and his opposition to the Employee Free Choice Act undermine the ability of Americans to have a voice at work. Minnesota deserves a Senator who stands up for the people and not the special interests."
Franken, a native of St. Louis Park, graduated from Harvard University and established a high-profile career as an award-winning comic actor, satirist and progressive political analyst and commentator. His writing credits include television, two movies and six books. He formerly hosted a show for Air America Radio, the first progressive talk radio network.
Franken has received a number of other union endorsements, including AFSCME Council 5, Fire Fighter Locals 21 and 3939, Teamsters Joint Council 32, Teamsters Local 120, Steelworkers District 11 and Steelworkers Locals 1938 and 2705.
Other candidates seeking the DFL endorsement for U.S. Senate are Mike Ciresi, Jim Cohen and Jack Nelson Pallmeyer.
