AFSCME and the University of Minnesota returned to the bargaining table Thursday to negotiate contracts covering some 3,300 clerical, technical and health care workers. The day before, workers rallied to say "We are worth more!"
The workers, among the lowest paid at the university, said the administation's offers on wages and health care still leave many of them struggling to make a living. A survey conducted earlier this year by AFSCME showed that 59 percent of the clerical, technical and health care workers work a second job to make ends meet.
"As the third largest public employer in the state of Minnesota, how is the administration leading the way for the families of Minnesota who work for a living?" the union asked in a flier distributed at the rally.
"If the full-time employees of this world class institution cannot make ends meet, how in the world will anyone else working in this state?"
Rallies were held on the Minneapolis and Duluth campuses. Contract talks have resumed with the help of a state mediator.
