UFCW, St. Paul grocers begin contract talks

Lunds/Byerly’s at this time will engage in separate negotiations, the union said.

Proposals were unveiled from the union bargaining committee and the grocers presented a state of the industry report.

“We stand ready to bargain an agreement that works for our members, and allows the employer group to not only retain sales but to grow sales in an increasingly competitive market," said Local 1189 President Don Seaquist.

The current grocery contract expires on March 5. The agreement covers more than 5,000 workers at stores in the east metro area.

Members and supporters kicked off the contract campaign Dec. 2 with a rally at the Rondo Community Library, then held up signs at the intersection of Dale St. and University Ave. Drivers honked their car horns as workers held up signs that read, “Affordable health care for all” and “Security is a union contract.”

Key goals in the bargaining are good wages, affordable health care and pensions, Seaquist said. The bargaining committee is made up of more than 30 rank-and-file members and is the largest in the union\’s history.

While talks are under way on the east metro contract, workers in northern Minnesota will be voting on whether to ratify a new grocery contract. Balloting is scheduled Tuesday, Jan. 25, in Duluth, Grand Rapids, Hibbing, Virginia and Superior, Wis.

UFCW Local 1189 represents over 11,000 workers in retail, healthcare, and food processing in Minnesota, Wisconsin and the Dakotas.
