Unions laud legislative action to create jobs

“This bill will provide good jobs that will support and sustain families,” said Minnesota AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Steve Hunter.

“This infrastructure bill for just under $1 billion will create 21,000 to 27,000 jobs,” said Harry Melander, president of the Minnesota State Building and Construction Trades Council.

“At least 9,000 jobs will be construction jobs, another 4,500 will be indirect service jobs like engineers and architects, and more than 10,000 will be in spin-off jobs for suppliers & service providers,” he said.

Two weeks ago, the Minnesota AFL-CIO announced its legislative priorities centering on jobs and revenue. The top priority was passage of a jobs infrastructure bonding bill of at least $1 billion.

The Senate passed its version of the bonding bill last week. Both bills invest about $1 billion in projects for higher education, transportation and transit and other areas.

“The minor differences will be worked out in a House-Senate conference committee which is expected to complete its work quickly. Governor Pawlenty then needs to follow the decisive action of the Senate and House and sign this bill when it lands on his desk,” said Hunter.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is made up of more than 1,000 affiliates representing over 300,000 working men and women throughout the state.
