Unions plan to protest Monday at a Minneapolis press conference where U.S. Senator Norm Coleman, R-Minn., and U.S. Commerce Secretary Don Evans are promoting free trade.
The demonstration will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, April 5, outside the Minneapolis Hilton, located at Marquette Ave. and 11th St., the Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council announced.
According to the labor council, Coleman and Evans plan to announce formation of a "Minnesota Manufacturers' Coalition" and call for expanded "free" trade.
Noting that free trade deals such as NAFTA have caused the loss of more than 15,000 Minnesota manufacturing jobs just since President Bush took office, the labor council urged proponents of fair trade to participate in the demonstration. "Let's show them that Minnesotan's want fair trade, not free trade!" said Minneapolis CLUC President Bill McCarthy.
