The demonstration will take place starting at 5 p.m. outside the House Chambers, on the second floor of the Capitol, the federation said.
The proposed legislation would put a measure on the November ballot to amend the Minnesota Constitution to require all voters to submit photo identification at the polls. It would eliminate the current process by which neighbors can vouch for voters without identification and would make Election Day registration impossible.
“Even though voters would be asked to approve the amendment this fall, they would have to wait and see what rules the 2013 Legislature makes to know if they would be affected by it,” the Minnesota AFL-CIO noted. “The amendment language does not define which government-issued IDs would be valid, if the ID must have a current address, how absentee voters would be affected and how a free \'voter ID\' could be obtained.
“Join us as we demonstrate our opposition against this amendment and help us keep our democracy accessible to all eligible voters!”
