Unions to protest out-of-state contractors June 25

The Laborers International Union, the International Union of Operating Engineers, the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters will protest the use of out-of-state contractors Wednesday, June 25, at the state Judicial Center.

The demonstration will start at 9:30 a.m. outside the Judicial Center, located at 25 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd. near the state Capitol.

Recently, the 89-mile Hutchinson Gas Pipeline Project was awarded to JOMAX, a non-union contractor from Kansas.

“JOMAX is not required to hire a fair percentage of Minnesota workers,” the unions said in announcing the demonstration. “In fact, historically JOMAX hires out-of-state cheap labor for most of its projects.”

The unions said that Minnesota is witnessing an increase non-union, out-of-state contractors placing bids and winning contracts on building construction, highway/heavy and pipeline projects. “The Pipeline Workers of America — a coalition of the IUOE, UA, LIUNA and IBT — would like all of Labor to join in a demonstration in support for Minnesota jobs,” the unions said in announcing the event.
