United Way 211 handling volunteer calls

The Department of Homeland Security received an overwhelming response from people wanting to help – from contractors with earth-moving equipment to those wanting to donate goods and services, the Twin Cities United Way reported.

"Emergency response agencies are not able to accept volunteer assistance and material donations at this time. Simply call 211 or from a cell phone dial 651-291-0211 to reach United Way 211. In greater Minnesota dial 1-800-543-7709."

United Way 211 can also help those who wish to donate blood, make financial donations, and those needing counseling services, the agency said.

United Way 211 is a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week information and referral service that is free and confidential. It provides trained information specialists who refer callers to over 40,000 resources in the community including: childcare, counseling, volunteering, food, health, housing, legal help, mental health, transportation, youth services and senior services.
