United Way, ACORN offer free tax prep for working families

• The United Way is leading "Claim It!" a community-wide effort to educate eligible families about Earned Income Tax Credit. The federal earned income credit (EITC) is a tax credit for people who work and have low wages. Taxpayers who qualify and claim the credit could pay less federal tax, pay no tax or receive a refund.

"Claim It!" offers free tax preparation by trained preparers for individuals and families with qualifying incomes: below $30,000 for individuals or below $40,000 for families. Senior citizens, people with disabilities and limited-English speakers also are eligible for the program.

• Minnesota ACORN is arranging free tax preparation for singles with a gross annual income of $30,000 or less and families with a gross annual income of $40,000 or less. ACORN also is working to line up qualified families with benefits screenings for state programs such as food support, medical assistance, MinnesotaCare, child care and energy assistance.
