Wal-Mart, the Wobblies and labor songs old and new are among topics featured in this year's "Untold Stories," a labor history series presented by Friends of the St. Paul Public Library and co-sponsored by several labor organizations.
Here is this year's schedule. All events begin in St. Paul:
? May 5: Liza Featherstone, author of "Selling Women Short," a new book about the class-action lawsuit for 1.4 million women, charging that Wal-Mart systematically deprives its female workers of promotions, pay and job assignments. Macalester College's Weyerhaueser Chapel, 1600 Grand Ave., 7 p.m.
? May 7: Labor's Troubadours. An afternoon of labor songs and poetry, featuring Larry Long, the Granary Girls, Mark Soderstrom, Mark Nowak, and Bojah and the Insurrection. Rice Park, 3 p.m. (Rain location: Central Library, 4th Floor Meeting Room, 90 W. 4th St.)
? May 10: Wal-Mart & The Low-Wage Economy. Features the short documentary "Always Low" and a panel discussing the effect of Wal-Mart on communities. With state Sen. Ellen Anderson, Bernie Hesse of UFCW Local 789, Brian MacMahon of University UNITED, and documentarians Elizabeth Dickinson and Ken Friberg. Hamline Midway Library, 1558 W. Minnehaha Ave., 7 p.m.
? May 12: The Wobblies in Print, featuring David Roediger, Peter Rachleff and Sal Salerno in a series of colorful readings commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Industrial Workers of the World. Hamline Midway Library, 1558 W. Minnehaha Ave., 7 p.m.
? May 15: I.W.W Walking Tour. Dave Riehle leads a tour of Wobbly sites in the Twin Cities, including the former Skid Row, Mill District and Elliot Park. A bus leaves from Highland Park Library, 1974 Ford Parkway, 2 p.m.
? May 17: In Defense of Floyd B. Olson. Historian and labor official Dave Riehle resurrects the former governor's contributions to Minnesota politics and labor relations. Rice Street Library, 1011 Rice St., 7 p.m.
? May 23: How We Got Where We Are ? The 50th Anniversary of the AFL-CIO Merger. Bob Hess, Dick Radman, David Roe and Neil Sherburne provide a behind-the-scenes look ? from the Minnesota perspective ? at the creation of today's labor movement. St. Paul Labor Centre, 411 Main St. 7 p.m.
