For the second year, the death of U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone will be commemorated with a weekend of music. Artists of all stripes will take part in Wellstone World Music Weekend.
Events will take place around the state on Saturday, Oct. 23; Sunday, Oct. 24; and Monday, Oct. 25, the two-year anniversary of the plane crash that killed Wellstone, his wife, Sheila, their daughter, Marsha, and five others.
Rather than a traditional memorial filled with speeches and solemnity, music critic Jim Walsh conceived of "Wellstone World Music Day" last year. Thousands participated, from professionals performing in concert halls to ordinary folks singing on street corners.
Like the original, this year's event is loosely organized and open to anyone. A list of some of the events can be found on the website, WellstoneWorldMusicDay.com
"As with last year's festivities, Wellstone World Music Weekend is a grass-roots effort in which any and all sorts of musical expressions make sense," Walsh says in a statement on the website.
