A group of union members and faith activists will stage their own marches to honor International Labor Day, before merging with Minneapolis' traditional May Day Parade and Festival.
The event is intended to reclaim May Day, said Rafael Espinosa, a business representative for UFCW Local 789. "When people think of May Day, they think more of a spring celebration," he said. "We're trying to go back to our roots, to bring awareness to the struggle of working people."
The labor and faith contingent is being organized by ISAIAH, Local 789, SEIU Local 26, and the Steel Workers Association Members Program, Espinosa said.
Marchers will gather at 1 p.m. at three Minneapolis congregations: Comunidad de Sagrado Coraz?n de Jes?s, 2211 Clinton Ave. S; El Milagro, 751 17th Ave. S; and Holy Rosary, 2424 18th Ave. S. Their marches will merge with the main May Day parade, which travels primarily down Bloomington Ave. before ending at Powderhorn Park.
