Actors present petition to Gov. Ventura

Members of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists and the Screen Actors Guild delivered a 26-yard-long petition to the office of Gov. Jesse Ventura Monday. The petition, containing more than 2,600 signatures, calls on the governor to use his influence to resolve the nearly five-month-old advertising industry strike.

‘Since the governor has been such a strong supporter of our industry in the past, we’re hoping the petition will convince him to intervene in any way he can to end the strike,’ said Mark Bradley, president of the Twin Cities AFTRA/SAG local.

The governor was in Canada when the union delegation delivered the petition, but his staff said they would see that he received the petition, along with a gold ribbon to show solidarity with the striking actors. The main issue in the strike is fair pay for cable TV and Internet advertising.

The petition indicates strong support for the strikers by the public, said Bradley. The signatures ‘were collected at the State Fair, mostly from ordinary folks who came by our booth in the House of Labor,’ he said.

Nationwide, 135,000 members of AFTRA and SAG are on strike against the advertising industry, including 1,200 in the Twin Cities.
