AFL-CIO blasts Labor Secretary nomination

The nomination of Linda Chavez, an outspoken opponent of minimum wage and anti-discrimination programs, as Secretary of Labor ‘is an insult to American working men and women,’ the AFL-CIO says.

In a press release, John Sweeney, president of the labor federation, said the union movement is ‘extremely disappointed and disturbed at the nomination” of Chavez by President-elect George W. Bush.

While director of the Commission on Civil Rights in the Reagan administration, Chavez favored terminating the commission and opposed programs to aid the advancement of women and minorities. In her syndicated newspaper column, she has been a vociferous opponent of the federal minimum wage and anti-discrimination measures such as affirmative action.

The Secretary of Labor is the top government official in charge of enforcing federal laws on wages, employment and pension rights, equal employment opportunity and workforce training.
