AFSCME Local 3800, the union representing clerical workers at the University of Minnesota, will celebrate “25 years of solidarity and struggle” on Thursday, June 16.
A gathering is planned in the Humphrey Forum from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and will feature hors d’oeuvres, cake and beverages. Starting at 6 p.m., a program will recognize members who have been with the union since its beginning in 1991 and will reflect on the local’s history and promising future.

“For the past 25 years, AFSCME has tirelessly fought for raises and respect in the workplace,” Local 3800 said in announcing the celebration. “We demanded recognition for our work as careers, for job security and flexibility, and for the respect and dignity that every worker deserves.
“Since unionizing in 1991, we have launched successful campaigns, from our Living Wage campaign raising the wage from $7 to $12 to our 2015 “Raises & Respect” campaign winning clerical workers a $15 starting wage. We included our families and future by fighting for our standard of living from tripling the length of paid parental leave for birth mothers to fighting for guaranteed annual step increases and winning a partial restoration of the Regents’ Scholarship for ALL University employees and continue to push for full restoration.
“We have made progress in pressing the University to recognize that bullying is a serious issue and that our members have a right to a safe and respectful workplace. The members of AFSCME 3800 are proud of these achievements and recognize that we still have work to do. We look forward to collectively raising our voices and strengthening our union in the years to come.”
