More than 400 union members are attending the national convention of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists August 3 and 4 in St. Paul.
AFTRA represents actors and other professional performers, and broadcasters in television, radio, sound recordings, non-broadcast/industrial programming and new technologies such as interactive programming and CD ROMs.
A national labor union affiliated with the AFL-CIO, it has headquarters in New York City and 36 local offices throughout the country, including the Twin Cities.
AFTRA's 80,000 members are seen or heard on television, radio and sound recordings and include actors, announcers, news broadcasters, singers (including royalty artists and background singers), dancers, sportscasters, disc jockeys, talk show hosts and others.
The two-day convention, being held at the Radisson Hotel St. Paul, will feature a number of workshops and sessions on issues affecting the broadcast and entertainment industries. Featured speakers will include Minnesota AFL-CIO President Ray Waldron and WCCO-TV anchor Don Shelby.
