Workday Magazine (https://workdaymagazine.org/airline-workers-laud-signing-of-aviation-security-bill/)

Representatives of airline workers are lauding President Bush's signing of a new aviation security bill that will, among other things, put federal employees in charge of airport passenger screening.

The new law “should greatly boost the public's confidence to return to the skies for travel,” said Captain Duane Woerth, president of the Air Line Pilots Association. “This new legislation will yield the most significant enhancements to security aboard airplanes and in airports in many years.”

The new law includes:

  • Federalizing the process for screening passengers and related security responsibilities to provide higher security and make practices uniform and consistent throughout the nation's air transportation system. As part of the civil service system, screeners will earn higher wages, reducing the massive turnover rate currently existing at most airports.
  • Increasing the number of Federal Air Marshals onboard flights.
  • Strengthening and fortifying cockpit doors on airplanes.
  • Permitting pilots to carry firearms if they receive the required training, subject to government and airline approval.

Unions representing airline workers in Minnesota were among the organizations supporting the legislation. Advocates in Congress included Minnesota's two U.S. Senators, Mark Dayton and Paul Wellstone, and Minnesota Congressman James Oberstar, the leading Democrat in the House on aviation issues.
