United Auto Workers Local 879 will celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Ford Twin Cities Assembly Plant on Aug. 13 and 14 as part of Highland Fest.
Construction of the current facility was completed in 1925 and began producing Model Ts that year. The St. Paul plant has operated continously for the 80 years since then.
Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Aug. 13 and 14, Local 879 will be giving away popcorn, gifts and raffling off books about the history of Ford Motor Company. A slide show about the history of the Twin Cities Assembly Plant, with rare old photos, will show every hour at the union hall, located across the street from the plant on Ford Parkway.
On Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., a "Tribute to Elvis" will be performed by Everett "Howie" Atherton, a UAW member and Ford Motor employee, at the union hall.
On display at the Hall will be the work of award winning photographer David Parker. About 40 photos from his book By These Hands: Portraits from the Factory Floor will be shown. The display includes photos of workers at the Ford assembly plant. All events are free and open to the public.
