Building Trades to demonstrate Thursday at condo project

The Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council and supporters will demonstrate at noon, Thursday, June 23, to protest a high-end condominium project being built with non-union labor.

The demonstration will be at the Sexton Building, 521 S. 7th St. in Minneapolis. The Building Trades Council is urging participants to wear their hardhats and union colors and to bring banners.

The 80-year-old Sexton Building is being transformed into expensive condominiums. The renovation was awarded to Regency Commercial Services, an out-of-state contractor from Des Moines.

“JJT Development, project owner, along with Regency Commercial Services, after verbally committing to use union labor, has decided to subcontract the vast majority of the work to non-union contractors,” said Dan McGowan, an organizer for the Laborers District Council of Minnesota and North Dakota.

“We need to send a message to JJT Development and Regency Commercial Services that Minneapolis and St. Paul provide good-paying jobs, excellent benefits and a highly trained and skilled workforce.”
