CAFTA opponents rally Thursday at Sen. Coleman’s office

The Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition and its allies will rally against CAFTA, the Central American Free Trade Agreement, at U.S. Senator Norm Coleman’s St. Paul office Thursday.

The rally will take place at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 21, outside Coleman’s office at 2550 University Ave. W., St. Paul.

“This bad trade deal will destroy Minnesota’s $2 billion-a-year sugar industry, wreak havoc on western Minnesota farms, and kill hundreds of Minnesota jobs,” the Fair Trade Coalition said in announcing the event. “The Senate is expected to vote on the proposal this spring ? and Sen. Coleman has not yet declared his views on CAFTA.”

The Bush administration negotiated the CAFTA deal to include the United States, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic (which actually is in the Caribbean, not Central America). The agreement is an extension of NAFTA, the North American Free Trade Agreement, which has hurt workers in the United States and Mexico since its enactment 10 years ago, the Fair Trade Coalition said.
