Carpenters councils in Minnesota, northern Wisconsin merge

The merger, which took effect Nov. 1, essentially creates a four-state council, the union said in a statement issued Wednesday. The council represents more than 20,000 active and retired union Carpenters, Interior Systems and Drywall Carpenters, Floor Coverers, Lathers, Millwrights, and Pile Drivers in 26 locals. Geographically, the new council covers:

€ All of Wisconsin except for six southeast counties near Milwaukee.

€ All of Minnesota and North Dakota.

€ All of South Dakota except Union County.

James Moore, who has been executive secretary-treasurer of the Northern Wisconsin council, is the EST, or principal officer, of the merged council. The council is headquartered out of Kaukauna, Wis. The St. Paul offices of the former Lakes and Plains Council remains open.

The new council will be much more focused on organizing and raising the standard of living of working carpenters, said Bobby Yeggy, vice president for the Central District of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners.
