The $2.8 million training center is being built by a partnership of the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters and signatory contractors from throughout southern Minnesota.
The Regional Council now has 11 training centers in operation or under construction in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. The Council and its training funds currently are investing $8.4 million in new training centers and expansion of existing centers. In addition, the Council spends $5 million every year to provide ongoing skill and safety training to members, whether they are apprentices or journeymen.
The Regional Council will break ground on new training centers in Fargo, N.D., and Sioux Falls, S.D., later in October. It is also adding an $810,000 expansion to the existing Jerry Alander Training Center in Hermantown, Minn. The expansion will bring total space there to more than 20,000 square feet.
The Regional Council opened a new Twin Cities training center in 2007 at 740 Olive Street in St. Paul. That center features apprenticeship classrooms and 32,000 square feet of shop space. The existing L.J. Shosten Union Training Center, off Highway 280 in St. Paul, is being converted to specialize in welding, rigging, and training for Millwrights and Pile Drivers.
The North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters represents 20,000 union Carpenters, Floor Coverers, Lathers, Millwrights and Pile Drivers in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota and South Dakota. The Regional Council is part of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

"Everybody talks about creating the skilled workforce of the future – we\’re doing it," said James E. Moore, executive secretary-treasurer of the North Central States Regional Council of Carpenters. "Our goal as a Union is to provide contractors the best-trained, most-productive, safest crews in the construction industry. This center helps us accomplish this in southern Minnesota."
The center is on 10th Avenue SW, in the industrial park at Highway 63 and County Road 16. It is scheduled to open in April 2009. The center will also house offices for Rochester Carpenters Local 1382.

"Not one dime comes from the state or federal governments," Moore said. "We pay for it all ourselves. That\’s how committed we are to training our members. That\’s how committed we are to training the skilled, new workers this industry needs."
