Residents of the Chisago Lakes Area school district will join drivers and members of Teamsters Local 320 to question a School Board plan to contract out bus service in the district. The Chisago Lakes Area School Board meets Thursday, Jan. 10, at 7 p.m. at Chisago Lakes Middle School, 13750 Lake Boulevard in Lindstorm.

Local 320 has raised a number of concerns about the privatization plan, particularly about security and cost.

"Current school bus drivers are neighbors, parents and grandparents from the community with years and years of experience and trust," the local said in an advertisement published in the Jan. 3 issue of the Chisago County Press. "If bus driving is contracted out, strangers from outside the community could be transporting our children. The school district will lose control over who is driving buses, opening up the risk that persons with questionable backgrounds could be transporting our children."

Cost - and the sale of district-owned buses to a private company, also are concerns, the union said. "They claim that bringing in an outside company will save money, but past experience shows that in the long run, subcontracting can cost taxpayers more."

The School Board said it has not had a chance yet to review two proposals from private companies interested in operating the district's bus system.
