Cosmetology instructors choose union

Instructors at the Minnesota School of Cosmetology, Inc., have voted to be represented by United Food & Commercial Workers Local 789.

The instructors voted 9-0 for the union in an election Thursday. They will join more than 7,500 Local 789 members in the east metro area.

“It is our hope that the company will sit down and bargain in good faith and will treat their workers with respect,” said Jennifer Christensen, secretary-treasurer of Local 789.

Minnesota School of Cosmetology is operated by Globe College in Oakdale, Minn. Local 789 is the proud sponsor of www.youareworthmore.org, a website that builds solidarity among retail workers, and is currently involved in organizing workers in retail, processing, healthcare, and the cosmetology industry.
