Delegates to the union’s Representative Convention made the decision on a unanimous voice vote Friday evening in Bloomington.
“It’s been a privilege serving with you and for you, as your president these last three years,” Dooher told delegates on Saturday. “It has been both challenging and rewarding and I’m looking forward to the things we’ll accomplish together in the future.”
Dooher said two main goals during his next term will be closing the achievement gap and working with state leaders to convince them Minnesota’s system of funding education is broken and must be repaired.
“Our children’s education should not depend on their ZIP code,” Dooher said. “We need to create a system that is equitable, sustainable, predictable and sufficient for all schoolchildren in the state. Right now it is none of those.”
“I believe that in the coming years, we will persuade new elected leaders to renew a commitment to excellence in education,” he said. “And I believe we educators will lead the way in developing innovative ideas that will help children learn.”
Delegates to the Representative Convention also re-elected Paul Mueller to a second term as vice president. Denise Specht also won a second term as secretary- treasurer.

Dooher told convention delegates that despite tighter budgets and less funding for schools in recent years, he’s confident about the future of education.

Dooher, 47, was unopposed in this year’s election. Prior to becoming state president, Dooher served as president of the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers for 10 years.
