Ellison, immigrant coalitions to be honored

The event takes place at the Crowne Plaza St. Paul Riverfront hotel in downtown St. Paul, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The evening will include a silent auction, dinner, the awards program and dancing.

TakeAction Minnesota is a new coalition formed this past year by the merger of the Minnesota Alliance for Progressive Action and Progressive Minnesota.

Ellison was elected Nov. 7 to Congress representing Minnesota\’s 5th District. He is the first African-American elected from Minnesota and the first Muslim to be elected to Congress. His campaign focused on issues important to working families, including goodpaying jobs, health care and education.

TakeAction Minnesota also will present an award for "Progressive Campaign of the Year" to two coalitions working for the rights of immigrant workers, AFFIRM (the Alliance for Fair Federal Immigration Reform in Minnesota) and MIRAC (Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Coalition).

Union partners in the TakeAction Minnesota coalition include AFSCME Council 5, CWA State Council, Duluth Central Labor Union Council, IUE-CWA, Minneapolis Central Labor Union Council, Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, MAPE, St. Paul Federation of Teachers, St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly, SEIU Local 113, SEIU Local 284, SEIU Minnesota State Council, UFCW Local 789, United Transportation Union, and UNITE HERE!
