Home health aides join AFSCME

Workers won representation in an election conducted by the National Labor Relations Board Nov. 17.

Many of the 128 workers in the new local are immigrants or refugees from Africa. They provide senior care at six assisted-living communities that Lang Nelson & Associates operates in five Twin Cities suburbs. Transition Health Care and Lang Nelson both are based in St. Louis Park.

Council 5 members from Local 744 at the Minneapolis Veterans Home and Local 977 at Hennepin County Medical Center were key in connecting the Transition workers to the union.

The victory means more than 335 workers have organized to join AFSCME Council 5 so far in 2010.
