Humphrey Institute names St. Paul labor leader to council

Shar Knutson, president of the St. Paul Trades and Labor Assembly, has been named to the Advisory Council of the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota. Knutson is the only labor official on the 46-member council.

The institute, which enrolls about 185 graduate students each year, also conducts research, provides technical assistance and consultation, and sponsors seminars and forums on issues related to public policies.

Advisory council members “are our ears and eyes to the community,” said communications director Julie Lund. “The dean uses the advisory council to stay connected, to have a sounding board, to have a place to talk about ideas for the institute, progress we’ve made and how we’re doing.”

Minnesota AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Steve Hunter previously served as a labor member of the Advisory Council, but stepped down when he was named to the university’s Board of Regents.
