International Falls teachers end strike

Members of Education Minnesota Local 331 in International Falls will return to work Monday, Oct. 14, after approving their 2001-03 contract on Saturday.

The agreement gives the district’s 93 teachers a 5.5 percent salary increase for the 2002-03 school year. It does not have a salary increase for 2001-02. The school board plans to meet Thursday to vote on the contract.

About 1,500 students from the district’s three public schools have been out of class since Sept. 20, when teachers walked out in a dispute over wages and health insurance, forcing the district to cancel school and after-school activities.

Meanwhile, a strike window opened Oct. 11 for 219 Red Wing teachers, who voted Sept. 23 to authorize a strike if no contract agreement is reached. The window will close Oct. 25.
