Iwo Jima flagraiser and union member dies

The photo of U.S. Marines raising a flag over the war-torn island became an icon of the Second World War and a symbol of patriotism. But the troops shown were lined up for the photograph; Lindberg and the other Marines who actually risked their lives to raise the flag were not pictured.

Lindberg lived long enough to see his heroism recognized, including being honored over Memorial Day at the groundbreaking for a World War II memorial in Richfield. Most of his life, however, was lived modestly and without fanfare. He loved his work as an electrician and his union, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
