MSEA is an established union of over 5,700 classified school employees from more than 55 school districts in Minnesota. MSEA is a democratic, member-driven organization supported by an experienced professional staff. We are seeking an experienced organizer to serve us in this important role.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
Oversees all organizing efforts including external organizing of unrepresented classified school employees and internal organizing of current MSEA membership. Responsible for developing and implementing special projects as assigned including training programs. Provides troubleshooting for field staff and oversees field services as needed. Manages organization in absence of the Executive Director.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Organizing: Plans, assesses needs and allocates resources; oversees the progress and effectiveness of each; guides staff and leadership toward successful completion of projects. Leads and administers organizing campaigns by identifying targets and developing a strategic plan for organizing. Track and monitor all internal, external and incremental growth. Advises and consults with Executive Director regarding organizing goals and budget and staff assignments on organizing campaigns and first agreements.
2. Special Projects: Responsible for developing, providing and maintaining special projects as assigned by the Executive Director, including member training programs.
3. Field Services Oversight: Responsible for providing troubleshooting for field staff and oversight of field services as needed.
Secondary Responsibilities
1. Human Resource Management: Ability to manage the organization in the absence of the Executive Director. Executive Director makes final decision on all personnel action. Assists Executive Director with union management contract negotiations.
2. Ability to work a flexible schedule and irregular hours, to travel as needed, and to work collaboratively with the Board of Directors.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Advanced knowledge of organizing; ability to plan, organize and coordinate associated work activities.
• Ability to work with and to manage staff; communicate effectively; build partnerships; apply conflict resolution skills when necessary.
• Advanced ability to analyze research data and make logical conclusions.
• Experience in labor relations, the bargaining process, contract negotiations and administration.
• Knowledge in areas of the legislative process on both local and state levels.
• Competent and persuasive in verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to exercise a considerable degree of independence, initiative and judgment in carrying out job assignments.
• Possession of a valid Minnesota State Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
• Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software and its application;
• Experience in union organizing and membership retention strategies in a labor organization;
• Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation and flexibility in pursuit of membership growth opportunities and identifying existing member satisfaction levels
