POSITION SUMMARY:
The Minnesota AFL-CIO is seeking a fulltime Strategic Partnerships Organizer to build and enhance strategic, enduring, and meaningful relationships between labor and community allies throughout the state; facilitate (or lead) the development of issue campaigns that will result in joint action to advance our shared social and economic justice goals; and mobilize affiliates, other labor organizations, community partners and allies to execute the campaigns/actions needed to achieve our mission.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Build and enhance strategic and enduring relationships between labor and community allies throughout the state. Mobilize labor and community partners around organizing, legislative action, and/or political campaigns that highlight working family issues and advance a shared agenda.
• Map existing and potential strategic relationships with community, faith, and non-profit organizations, youth and student organizations, and other progressive organizations.
• Establish new, strategic, and mutually beneficial relationships between labor and community allies that strengthen labor’s ability to advance organizing and pro-working family policies.
• Coordinate/facilitate long-term planning to build strategic alliances.
• Participate in local structures (coalitions, alliances) that maximize the effectiveness and engagement of local allied groups.
• Engage allied organization leaders and staff, identify areas of concern, and where appropriate, take action.
• Expand communication opportunities between labor organizations and community partners.
• Work with affiliates, other labor organizations, and community organization leaders to identify and train members in advocacy and how to take action (recruitment and training for activists).
• Organize and coordinate program and logistics for town hall meetings, rallies, protests, and other grassroots events.
• Enhance rapid response capabilities.
• Perform a limited amount of administrative work, such as creating and maintaining a database of community allies and contact information, meeting dates, times, locations, etc. and data entry

Other duties as defined by the Executive Officers of the Minnesota AFL-CIO.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
• Four years of post-secondary education preferred.
Experience
• Minimum two years of experience in community, faith, non-profit, union, political or organizing work.
• Demonstrated relationships with community, faith and/or non-profit organizations.
• Broad knowledge of and experience in building unity among diverse groups and in recruiting and mobilizing others to take action.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and drive effective and creative programs, convene and facilitate meetings, and balance the interests of various stakeholders.
Skills
• Possession of excellent listening, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Possession of sharp problem-solving skills.
• Flexible, creative and highly motivated.
• Ability to motivate and activate others.
• Ability to work in a cooperative manner with other staff and fellow directors.

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is seeking a fulltime Membership Development & Data Metrics Coordinator to build a membership development program that results in increased volunteer rank-and-file participation through a multi-union, statewide leadership development program; continue to strengthen accountability structures that result in more member- and results-driven programs that advance our shared social and economic justice goals; and mobilize affiliates, other labor organizations and community partners and allies to execute the campaigns/actions needed to achieve our mission. The fulltime, temporary position will be under the direction of the State Federation and funded by the State Federation in partnership with the national AFL-CIO Solidarity Fund. The position is funded through September 2014, and after the position is evaluated, may be extended.

  • Build a membership development program that results in increased volunteer rank-and-file participation.
  • Continue to strengthen accountability structures by expanding progress reports beyond voter contact to include leadership development, volunteer recruitment and performance.
  • Work with affiliates, other labor organizations and stakeholders to:
  1. Take inventory of information stored on databases and use lists, models and tools to identify members who take action and/or volunteer and potential activists from which we should recruit.
  2. Research best practices in volunteer recruitment and experience, membership development, and accountability structures.
  3. Facilitate a planning process around membership development and rank-and-file participation that shares and discusses inventories and best practices and establishes goals and benchmarks and timelines for evaluating our progress on a regular basis.
  4. Write a member development and participation plan.
  5. Strengthen accountability structures/tools to better track and measure commitment and capacity to develop and mobilize members.
  6. Present regular progress reports.
  7. Recognize, reward and promote member volunteers/activists.

Data Specialist
AFSCME Council 5

Pursuant to the provisions of the Staff Union Contract, we are posting the above Data Specialist position.  This position is full-time (37.5 hours per week), Monday thru Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM and is based out of the South St. Paul Office. The starting salary is $3,674.00 per month.

JOB SUMMARY:
We are looking for the non-standard data entry/processing specialist.  Those with only Data Entry experience need not apply. We want someone who is passionate about databases and enjoys the logic and problem solving that comes with mapping raw data.

PRIMARY DUTIES:
•    This position is heavily detail-oriented and requires daily in-depth use of our union specific database system.
•    Exporting, Importing and mapping raw data files received for the database.
•    Develop and maintain standards for database integrity and quality assurance.
•    Work with current membership staff to produce standard operating procedures in our database.
•    Manage, organize, maintain, and provide user support for the database. 
•    Report needs specification and analysis.
•    Conduct audits and provide feedback to reduce errors and improve processes and performance.
•    Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
•    Must have experience working with raw data files and field mapping.
•    High proficiency and significant experience with Excel (especially functions), delimited text, CSV and standard Microsoft products including Access.
•    Previous experience in maintaining and populating databases.
•    Must have experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.
•    Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, time/project management and sense of urgency.
•    Ability to overcome technical and non-technical challenges.
•    S/he must be personable, motivated and flexible under pressure.
•    Must be extremely analytical and detailed-oriented to maintain a high level of data integrity.
•    Skills to interpret needs of users to produce report output.

Minimum Associates Degree and 2 years business experience in data entry manipulation. Programming knowledge is a plus.

Lead Organizer
Teamsters Public and Law Enforcement Employees’ Union Local 320
Minnesota Teamsters Local 320 is a statewide labor union representing 11,000 state, county, and municipal and school district employees. We are working to expand our membership and grow our union amongst Minnesota’s 352,903 local government employees. We are currently seeking a Lead Organizer, based out of our Minneapolis Office, who reports directly to the Local’s Principal Officer. The Lead Organizer will be responsible for all organizing activities for the Local Union including but not limited to research, following leads, recruiting volunteer member-organizers and combating decertification elections.

Purpose:
The Lead Organizer will conduct a wide array of organizing activities including developing organizing targets, data collection, strategic planning, implementing organizing campaigns, initiating representational elections, volunteer recruitment and rigorous reporting schedule.

Primary Job Responsibilities:
i. Educate workers and build support for the Teamsters Union
ii. Plan and implement the Local’s external organizing campaigns
iii. Identify and analyze potential organizing targets
iv. Manage lists, charts and data
v. Train, develop and direct volunteer member-organizers who are existing Local 320 members and potential Local 320 members
vi. Work with Local 320 officers and staff to recruit volunteer member-organizers and aid in collective bargaining and legislative campaigns.

Qualifications for Lead Organizer Applicants:
i. Must have a valid driver’s license and American-made vehicle
ii. Willingness to work long and irregular hours
iii. Must work independently with minimal supervision in the field
iv. Must have proven success in public sector organizing campaigns
v. Must have proven success recruiting volunteer member-organizers
vi. Must be prepared to conduct worksite visits, home visits and speak directly with organizing leads and targets
vii. Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills
viii. Basic understanding of the Minnesota Public Employment Labor Relations Act (PELRA) a plus!

Candidates not in the Twin Cities Metro must relocate at his/her expense if offered position.
Significant travel statewide is required.
