Staff of the University of Minnesota Labor Education Service are offering a course on ?Labor History and Union Organizing,? open to anyone interested in learning more about workers and their organizations.
Professor John Remington and Instructor Lisa Jordan are teaching the class, which starts Jan. 21 and runs from 5:45 to 8 p.m. on eight consecutive Wednesdays at the university. HRIR 3071 is an undergraduate class with no prerequisites, so anyone can enroll.
Those who complete the course will receive two semester credits through the Industrial Relations Center at the Carlson School of Management. Credits earned also would be applicable to the National Labor College program offered through the George Meany Center or any other undergraduate program in which a student is enrolled. The course also may be audited for no credit. Tuition is $456 for students taking it for credit, $200 for those auditing.
The class provides an introduction to unions and the collective bargaining process, including a review of labor history, union structure, workplace law and organizing in the United States and across borders. ?We welcome all students, particularly union members, who can bring real life experience to the class discussions,? said Remington.
For more information about the course and how to enroll, contact Remington at 612-624-7863, e-mail jremington@csom.umn.edu, or Jordan at 612-626-2034, e-mail ljordan@csom.umn.edu
During the second half of spring semester, starting in March, Remington will teach a class on collective bargaining, also open to anyone. Contact him for more information.
