Labor Education Service updates training, launches new leadership program

The changes include an overhaul of traditional labor studies courses, a new Minnesota Union Leadership Program and expanded Labor in the Community public programming.

“The Labor Education Service is pleased to offer more options and reach out to new audiences, while maintaining the ‘nuts and bolts’ training that LES has provided for many decades,” said LES Director Howard Kling.

To learn more about any of the following programs, visit the LES website or call the LES office, 612-624-5020.

Labor Studies Skills Courses
LES has streamlined and focused its labor studies course offerings, making them available in one- or two-day sessions open to anyone. The new schedule replaces the old Labor Studies Certificate Program, which is being discontinued. Students currently enrolled in the program can contact LES for assistance in completing their certificate.

“We experienced declining enrollment in the certificate program, at the same time we had continuing demand for basic courses such as steward training,” noted Kling. “This new schedule makes the best use of our resources to meet those needs.”

Upcoming skills courses are Trade Union Administration, Dec. 5; Introduction to the Labor Movement, Jan. 30; Contract Negotiations, March 13 and 20; and Basic Arbitration, April 10 and 17.

Minnesota Union Leadership Program
The Minnesota Union Leadership Program is unique training for union officers and staff and emerging leaders. Participants will attend eight full-day sessions over a two-year period, starting in February 2010. Space is limited to 30 people to ensure a quality educational experience. Those attending will be drawn from different unions and backgrounds.

Through sessions such as “Toward a More Perfect Union” and “Organizing for Our Future,” participants will develop a deeper understanding of the critical issues affecting working people in Minnesota.

“Members of the Labor Education Service Advisory Committee say this is one of the best programs LES has ever offered,” said Kling. “We believe it will become a must-do educational experience for both seasoned and new union officers and staff.”

Established in the 1950s, the mission of the Labor Education Service is to serve working people across Minnesota. To further that goal, LES is expanding its public programming to reach new and larger audiences.

“Our Labor in the Community programming includes everything from film screenings to panel discussions and conferences,” said Kling. “These sessions are designed to engage the community in discussions of important contemporary issues, such as health care.”

In addition, LES staff are working to create curriculum on labor topics for use in classrooms, such as the recently launched website of materials on the 1934 Minneapolis Teamster strikes, www.minneapolis1934.org

Customized Education and Media Services
While instituting new programming, LES will continue to provide customized education and media services for organizations around the state. These include trainings, video production, Internet services and the news website, Workday Minnesota.

“Providing services tailored to the needs of unions and their members has always been a core part of our work and will continue to be,” said Kling. “We can develop and implement a comprehensive educational plan for your organization or fill in the gaps in your current programs and services.

“Labor Education Service is here for working people and their organizations – we are your resource.”
