The “Labor Movie Night” film series at the East Side Freedom Library will feature “A Brief Vacation” (Italy, 1973, 112 minutes, Rated PG) Tuesday, June 6, at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
This dramatic film, by renowned director Vittoria De Sica, comes from a story based on poet Guillaume Apollinaire’s proverb that “sickness is the vacation of the poor.”
Clara, a factory worker trapped by her life off the job as well as on the job, collapses with a lung disease which lands her in a sanatorium in the mountains where she rediscovers herself.
This powerful film emerged in relationship to the radical labor upheavals in late 1960s and early 1970s Italy and the emergence of feminism within the Italian working class.
The East Side Freedom Library is located at 1105 Greenbrier St., St. Paul (near Payne Ave. and Maryland Ave. E.)
