The continuing “Labor Movie Night” series will present the documentary “Plutocracy I: Political Repression in the U.S.A,” Tuesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m. at the East Side Freedom Library, 1105 Greenbrier St., St. Paul.
This recent documentary (2015), part of a four-part series about American labor history, begins with the deepening of the industrial revolution in the third quarter of the 19th century and explores workers’ efforts to organize unions in the face of ferocious repression from employers, private security officers, and government.
The film looks at major mid-to-late 19th century labor events including the uprising of 1877, the Haymarket affair, the Homestead strike and the New Orleans General Strike and examines the West Virginia coal wars of the early 20th century, culminating in the Battle of Blair Mountain.
“Labor Movie Night” is free and open to all and is co-sponsored by AFSCME Local 3800 and the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation.
