Laborers air radio ads slamming Fleet Farm practices

The cheapest and most unskilled labor that can possibly be found is being shipped in to build a Mills Fleet Farm in Carver, with the maximum amount of public subsidy funding available helping subsidize this snub of high-skilled craftsmen who live in the project’s back yard, the Laborers union said.

The radio spots will be heard starting Friday – that’s the crucial Black Friday shopping day – are part of a continuing effort to persuade Fleet Farm to stop using unskilled and cheap labor from out of town for the retail outlet’s construction.

“Our continuing efforts to reach out and meet with Mills Fleet Farm executives about their business practices is falling on deaf ears,” said Tim Mackey, business manager for Twin Cities-based Local 563 of the Laborers’ International Union of North America. “I’m hoping they hear our spots.”

The ad’s script portrays two deer hunters talking about Fleet Farm’s use of cheap labor while taking tax dollars to build their $20.5 million project.

“Shame on them!” says one hunter.

“Fleet Farm is cheating this community,” the other hunter responds. “Hey, where are you going?”

The first hunter answers, “Now that we’ve scared the deer away, I’m headed in – to let everyone know I’m not happy with Fleet Farm’s business practices.”
