Workers at the downtown Holiday Inn RiverCentre and the hotel's Mississippi Mud River Grille restaurant have the next six months to choose whether or not to unionize, under a labor peace agreement signed Jan. 22.
The agreement between HERE Local 17 and Holiday Inn president Ken Golder ends the union's boycott and picketing of the hotel and restaurant. Golder, in turn, agrees not to conduct an anti-union campaign and to automatically recognize the union if a majority of workers signs cards in the next six months seeking representation by Local 17.
'I will fully support the decision of the team members, whatever their decision is,' Golder said.
Jaye Rykunyk, principal officer of Local 17, called the card-check neutrality agreement 'an extraordinary moment for all of us.' She said the deal to let workers make their own decision in an atmosphere free of animosity and fear 'is in the best interests of the workers, the best interests of the hotel, and the best interests of the city.'
Mayor Randy Kelly, who witnessed the signing, called the agreement another sign of the revitalization of St. Paul. 'Their cooperation exemplifies stakeholders overcoming their differences to come together for the good of all,' he said.
Golder praised his employees, noting their 'focus on people' has led to the hotel receiving top ratings among Holiday Inns in the state and region for customer satisfaction. He said he would welcome Local 17 as a partner if employees want the union 'along for the ride.' As part of the signing ceremony, Golder handed over a folder listing the names and contact information of the roughly 80 employees so Local 17 organizers can begin their 'non-disruptive campaign.'
